How to get to Hakone from Tokyo?

The most convenient way to get to Hakone from Tokyo is via train.

You have two options for taking the train from Tokyo to Hakone.

Option 1:

The first and fastest option is to take the Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station. (Tokaido Shinkansen line)

Once you reach Odawara Station, take the Odakyu Romance Car (Express Train) to Hakone-Yumoto Station.

Do note express trains need prior reservations so book your ticket in advance.

The entire journey from Tokyo Station will take less than an hour.

If you have a JR Railpass, you can use it from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station via bullet train only.

Option 2:

You can also catch the Odakyu Romance Car from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.

Once you reach Odawara Station, change the Romance Car to Hakone-Yumoto Station.

Note Romance Cars are nothing but a nice electric train operated in Japan. Prior reservations are mandatory which can be done online.

JR Railpass will not work on Romance Cars so do keep that in mind if you have one.

This journey will take a little over 1 hour 30 minutes in total.

Considering we are focusing on day trips, let’s talk about the absolute essentials first. These are the things you absolutely must do in Hakone.

I have provided the things to do as per importance. Hence, the ones at the bottom of the list can be done only if you have time.

You can just tell the local what all you want to do and they will take you around.

Typically, you are allowed to choose 4 to 5 activities from over 10 experiences.

It is located quite near to Owakudani Station. There are a few other snacks and local munchies available here. However, it is the black eggs that attract tourists and locals to the place.

Do remember, the black eggs are volcanic eggs and smell of sulphur. It is still a delicacy and quite healthy.

While the service at Itoh Dining by Nobu may be a bit slow, you do get the best of Japanese fine dining cuisine.

The udon and soba noodle dishes are absolutely the best of local cuisine you can taste.

Even though it is an extremely small eatery, it is highly recommended by locals.

Getting back to Tokyo from Hakone

To get back to Tokyo from Hakone, the two best options are as follows.

Option 1:

First, take the bus from Hakone to Odawara Station.

Next, from Odawara Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen line.

The thing to keep in mind here is the bus timings from Hakone.

While the journey is about 40 minutes, sometimes it can take a lot longer due to traffic. Hence, check on google maps for driving directions to get an idea of the traffic situation.

Option 2:

Take the Hakone Tozan Railway from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Odawara Station.

For those staying at Gora, you can take the scenic mountain train from Gora to Hakone-Yumoto Station. This is also operated by Hakone Tozan Railway.

Once you reach Odawara station, you can take the Shinkansen bullet train to Tokyo as explained above in option 1.

Do keep an eye out for the timings of the various trains in the evenings.

As far as late March is concerned, it is ideal due to the cherry blossoms and greenery all around.
